Artist Statement

My algorithm-based generative art reflects the beauty and turbulence of our world. I create each artwork with an algorithm that is written in code. The artwork starts with a blank image that iteratively develops, as I edit the code and view the outputs. My process has evolved through daily practice, collaborations with different artists, as well as projects developed with art collectors, including fine art prints and non-fungible token collections. My preferred coding tools reflect my experience as research scientist, crafting algorithms for simulations, analyses, and plotting for scientific publications.

Art & Science

My generative artwork has been selected for the permanent art collection at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where I am a faculty member, the juried annual art publication MUSC Humanitas, Courtenay Street Art Gallery, and Piccolo Spoleto Annual Juried Art Exhibition (detailed below).

Prior to writing algorithm-based art, my art experience included drawing, painting, stained glass apprenticeships, as well as nature photography.

I started experimenting with code to generate art in the R Statistics Language out of curiosity. I have been writing R code in my role as a researcher for many years, which includes biostatistics and precise graphics for scientific plots. As I shared my early artistic experiments, I encountered a wonderful online community of creative coders from disciplines that include engineering, mathematics, economics, computer science. This community includes many members of the Generative Artists Club and other artists around the world.

Because of my scientific background, I always aim to describe each of my art algorithms in plain language. The descriptions may provide interesting practice for curious coders, who have written me to show me their takes on my artwork and other interesting side-quests. Moreover, these recipes allow lay audiences to better appreciate the process and more fully enjoy the artwork.

Collecting My Artwork

My generative artwork is available as limited or single edition fine art prints from the online shop. Some of these artworks are giclee prints, which involve rich color ink sets on archival paper that are produced by a professional printer. Other artworks are produced with a robotic pen plotter on archival paper at my studio, which have a more hand-drawn look due to the apparatus.

Several collections of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) with my artwork are available through different platforms and blockchains. Some may be available to purchase from collectors, and others may be minted or purchased directly from the platforms.

Casual viewers and collectors may enjoy visiting online NFT galleries as they can provide a broad sample of my artwork and their iterations in a lasting format.
